.It’s July 4th!

The day that America was born.

July 4th has become a quintessential summer holiday, complete with pools, parades and barbecues, all of which I love – summer is my favorite season, after all, and I have an awesome smoothie recipe that can get you in the spirit of July 4th and boost your fertility at the same time!

I debuted this smoothie in July 2017 during my free 10-Day Fertility Smoothie Challenge, and now it’s become part of my July 4th tradition!  It has red, white and blue foods to honor America’s colors, and throws in some green, because, well, with food, green is good!

Red, White and Blue (and Green!) July 4th Fertility Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain coconut milk (from a carton, not a can)
  • 1 handful spinach leaves (about 1 cup)
  • 1/2 banana
  • strawberries, 1/2 cup
  • blueberries, 1/2 cup
  • 1 tsp ground flax seed
  • a few ice cubes for extra frothiness (optional)

Directions (pay attention, this is tricky!):  Place all ingredients in your blender in the order listed.  Blend and drink up!  Serves 2.

Here are Charlie and I during my Fertility Smoothie Challenge in 2017, drinking our Red, White & Blue (and Green!) Smoothies on July 4th.  We love flying (and drinking!) the colors!

There are so many reasons this smoothie is good for boosting fertility.  It’s full of foods that have the nutrients we need to balance our hormones and regulate our ovulation.  Issues with ovulation are the leading cause of female infertility.  Things like folate (spinach), vitamin B( spinach), potassium (banana), Vitamin C (strawberries) and healthy omega-3 fatty acids (flax seed) all serve to optimize preconception health as well as prenatal health for when you do get pregnant.  The blueberries are loaded with healthy antioxidants to protect against cell damage, and keep your cells healthy, including those precious egg and sperm cells that are so vital for conceiving.  Blueberries are so beneficial that they’ve been labeled a “fertility superfood!”

Why a fertility smoothie on July 4th?

While I’m enjoying my fertility smoothie on July 4th, I also love to also reflect on the meaning of what this holiday is all about and the lesson it can teach us on a fertility journey.

July 4th, is about so much more than summer fun, even though that is what we usually celebrate on this day.  This is the day that America was born.  The day that the original 13 colonies declared that they were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain and were instead free, united and sovereign states.

This holiday celebrates the birth of America as an independent nation.

Declare your fertility independence

On this journey, we can feel so powerless.  I would argue that in some instances we are made to feel powerless.  Sometimes our doctor or other well-intentioned professionals we encounter on this path, instead of validating our experience and recognizing that we know our own bodies best, make recommendations that aren’t right for us, or don’t recommend things that we would like to try.

Fertility doctors aren’t bad people, or even bad professionals.  They are guided by years of professional study and training.  They want us to have our babies as much as we do. But sometimes their practice isn’t about treating the whole person and they sometimes can forget this in the course of carrying out their practice.

That’s why we need to do our part to take the best possible care of ourselves, and to speak up, in a polite way, of course, to our medical professionals when we feel it’s warranted.  To do not so would frankly be un-American!

This is what I did on my own journey through fertility.  I learned how to find my voice.  I expressed to my doctor that intuitively I knew that donor egg IVF wasn’t the path that would lead me to having my baby, despite what his data and my test results showed.  It wasn’t easy to do this.  We’re socialized to not question doctors, and we women are especially socialized to not question anybody in authority.  But I found the strength to do that, and relied on the power of my own body and my own mind to have my baby.

Just as July 4th is the day that America declared herself an independent nation, you can declare your own independence over your fertility journey.

We have our own arsenal to take control over our fertility.  Diet and nutrition are one of the most effective tools we have in that arsenal.  I’d argue they are the most effective tools we have.  Every day we have the power to decide what we put into our bodies.  We can choose foods that nourish us or foods that deplete us.  Foods that will help our future baby grow and thrive or food that won’t.  Food that will make us feel good in our bodies, or food that will cause us to feel shame about our bodies.

That’s a tremendous amount of power.  My July 4th fertility smoothie is full of foods that will help you on your journey to improved fertility and health.

This July 4th, seize your power over your fertility.  One fertility smoothie at a time.
